LaVerne Donald Swanberg

This picture was taken of LaVerne at his mother's funeral May 17, 1925, at the cemetery of the Swedish Lutheran church in Wood River, Wisconsin.

LaVerne probably led a very lonely life as he was shuttled from family to family and so far in my research he isn't’ mentioned anywhere until Johanna’s obituary. He was always very sick, and may have road the rails which is where he may have contracted Tuberculosis at the age of 17. In January 1928 he was taken to the State Sanitarium in Milwaukee where he spent 5 years and in May 1933 was transferred to the Middle River Sanitarium in Hawthorne Wisconsin. The last 2 years of his life was spent at the Pure Air Sanitarium in Bayfield Wisconsin where he died at 11:20 P.M. on Sunday February 20, 1944. LaVerne was buried in the family plot at the Swedish Lutheran cemetery in Wood Lake. While LaVerne was in the Sanitarium at Middle River, which was a few miles south of Superior, Wisconsin, he as visited regularly by his remaining brothers and sisters. Many of us remember waiting in the car while our parents were in the hospital visiting with him. While waiting in the car, LaVerne would wave to us for his hospital window. He was dearly loved by all, but rarely would our parents discuss the circumstances concerning his birth.
